Penny offense: Man fined for paying fee in pennies

No lucky pennies here: Police have charged Jason West, an aggrieved medical patient in Vernal, Utah, with disorderly conduct. His alleged crime? Attempting to pay a disputed medical bill of $25 entirely in pennies.

The story, reported in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, describes the "penny offense" this way: West, 38, did not believe he owed the medical clinic $25 but came in to pay the fee in person. He first asked the clinic staff if the facility accepted cash payments, and then dumped 2,500 pennies onto the counter and demanded that they be counted.

But West apparently hadn't counted on the clinic calling the police; the arresting officer contended that West's protest served "no legitimate purpose." The charge carries a fine that can go as high as $140--and there's no word as yet on what currency West will use to pay it.

West isn't alone in the ranks of penny protesters. A wise guy in Frederick, Maryland, showed up at the county clerk's office last summer with bags of cash to pay off his tax bill with $966.86 in change.

And a New Jersey school district a few years back punished 29 students who paid for their $2 school lunches in pennies--possibly as a prank--with two-day detentions. After parents protested, the students were pardoned. The school explained that the use of the small change slowed down the lunch line.

700-Million-Year-Old Fossils: Oldest Armored Creature?

 Fossils of tiny creatures living hundreds of millions of years ago may represent the oldest example of an organism with its own mineral coating such as is seen today on snails. The fossils indicate that the simple microorganisms were covered in plates with teethlike spines — an evolutionary feature that puzzles scientists.

The fossils, discovered in the summer of 2007 though not fully examined until now, are detailed this week in the journal Geology.

The discovery involved rock hammers and a shotgun: Phoebe Cohen, a postdoctoral researcher in MIT's department of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences, and Francis Macdonald, an assistant professor of geology at Harvard University, set up camp in a remote mountain range along the Alaska-Canada border to examine the rock there. Macdonald had to fire the shotgun to scare off a grizzly bear once during their two-week stay at the site, which was accessible only via helicopter.

This scanning electron microscopy image reveals the microfossil Characodictyon, which is about 20 microns long, or one-fifth the width of a human hair, and covered in spiny plates.

 After chiseling out of the mountainsides, the duo said, they hauled rocks back to their lab and discovered incredibly well-preserved fossils resembling tiny shieldlike plates.

Sudeep's Police Story 3 to be shot in 12 hours

After the movie Sugreeva, another Kannada movie is gearing up to enter the list of Limca Book of records. According to sources, Kicha Sudeep's next film titled Police Story 3 will create a new record by shooting in a very short span of time. Sugreeva was shot in 18 hours, where as Police Story 3 will be filmed in 12 hours. It is reported that this movie will be dubbed in other languages too.

According to sources, Thriller Manju is the main director of Police Story 3. Directors like Sadhu Kokila, Victory Vasu, Lucky Shankar, Anand P Raju, JG Krishna are said to be directing different sequences of the film, which will have a host of cameramen like AV Krishna Kumar, MR Seenu and a few others.

The film Police Story 3 is a sequel of the movie Police Story of Saikumar, who has also acted in Police Story 2. Thriller Manju is writing the story and the screen play in collaboration with Shankar, while Shashank's assistant Venu pens the dialogues for the film. Gurukiran's assistant Haricharan will score music for the movie, which will have only two songs.

Thriller Manju will also appear in a special role besides introducing four new artists in Police Story 3. The shooting of the movie will be held at the Sapota Gardens in the Bangalore Palace. The film starts rolling at 6.00 am on 6th January and will complete its shooting at 6.00 pm on the same day.

Lady Gaga picks up US fashion icon award, Lady Gaga CFDA Awards 2011 Photos

Pop star Lady Gaga was presented with the fashion icon trophy at this year's Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) award ceremony.

The singer, well known for her outrageous outfits, was given the prize for "being a fashion revolutionary", the CFDA said.

"All of you made me feel like a star before I was," Gaga told the audience at New York's Lincoln Center.

There were also prizes for photographer Arthur Elgort and designer Marc Jacobs.

Elgort, best known for his work on the fashion magazine Vogue, was presented with the special tribute award for his "impact on photography and fashion".

The Geoffrey Beene lifetime achievement award went to Jacobs.

"This achievement is born of love, passion, creativity and a hell of a lot of hard work," the 48-year-old designer said.

The Congress has reprimanded BJP leader Sushma Swaraj for dancing during the BJP's recent all-nighter protest against the crackdown on Baba Ramdev's yoga camp over the weekend.

"Rajghat is a sacred place," said Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, adding that Ms Swaraj had no business to break into dance at Rajghat, which houses Mahatma Gandhi's memorial.

Last evening, Congress spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi wondered what  Ms Swaraj was celebrating. "What kind of fast is this when the Leader of the Opposition is dancing along with her friends at Gandhi's Samadhi?" he asked at a press conference.

Ms Swaraj had retaliated last night with a series of tweets.  She said that she performed to patriotic songs which are often used by her party to motivate workers

Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah also weighed in on Ms Swaraj today. "Having now seen the videos I have no doubt at all that my dad is a better dancer than Sushma Swaraj. Glad dance now acceptable protest," he tweeted. (Read: Omar says dad a better dancer than Sushma)

Today, Ms swaraj took on her detractors once again on twitter."We are patriotic people. We will sing, swing and dance on patriotic songs till our last breath. Those who do not like this suffer from slave mentality," she tweeted.

Baba Ramdev in Ladies dress Photos, Baba Ramdev on being caught dressed as a woman

Baba Ramdev, who was caught in a dramatic fashion while trying to flee in a woman's attire from Delhi's Ramlila Maidan today, justified his act.

"It was not a sign of weakness to be in a woman's dress. A mother gives birth to a man," Ramdev said when asked at a press conference here about his act of shedding the saffron attire and posing as an injured woman in trying to escape from the protest site following the police crackdown.

The 46-year-old yoga guru almost gave the police a slip by jumping from the dais in Ramlila Maidan and vanishing into thousands of his supporters on Saturday night.

About two hours later, he was caught outside the protest site while posing as an injured woman wearing a white-coloured salwar suit with his head covered with a dupatta. At the time of arrest, he was pretending to be moving with the support of two women around whom he put his arms.

Ramdev lashed out at Delhi Police, alleging its personnel attacked innocent women and children. "Lobbing teargas shells in a closed shamiana were the most violent act of the police," he said and alleged "police did not allow any injured person to stay in hospitals."

To a question, he said "I have respect for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a personal level but he did not discharge his national duty."

He referred to the Supreme Court taking suo motu notice of the crackdown and thanked it.

Human rights organisations and the National Commission for Women should also take note of the "atrocities" committed against innocent people including women and children at Ramlila ground, Ramdev said.

Kapil Sibal advices Ramdev to go back to Yoga. In the same vein, he should go back to being a lawyer or perhaps not.

The big winners at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday included Robert Pattinson who snagged awards for his performance in ""The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" as well as his fight scene against Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel. "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart also won for Best Female Performance and Best Kiss (with Pattinson).

Other shoo-in winners included Justin Bieber who received the MTV Movie Award for Best Jaw-Dropping Moment in the concert film "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never."

Reese Witherspoon was recognized for her versatility as an actress and for delighting the MTV audience throughout her career as this year's recipient of the Generation Award.

Witherspoon possibly had the line of the night, accepting her award. "It's cool to be bad, girls... I get it. ... But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show."

As for host Jason Sudeikis, it was a considerable improvement over last year's host Aziz Ansari. The "Saturday Night Live" thesp seemed at ease on stage and while the writers may have been more on point this year, his rapport with the crowd seemed more than effortless.

Infosys founder's son weds TVS chief's daughter, NR Narayana Murthy son marriage with Venu and Mallika Srinivasan daughter

Chennai: The scions of two of big Indian business families, Infosys and TVS got married on Sunday at a function attended by high-profile businessmen and politicins.

Rohan Murthy, son of software major Infosys' founder NR Narayana Murthy, married Lakshmi Venu, daughter of industrialist couple Venu and Mallika Srinivasan.

Venu Srinivasan heads the country's second largest two-wheeler maker TVS Motor company and his wife Mallika Srinivasan heads the tractor major Tafe Ltd.


The guest list included former deputy prime minister LK Advani, union ministers GK Vasan, Anand Sharma and P Chidambaram, Sashi Ruia of the Essar Group, head of Unique Identification Authority of India Nandhan Nilekani, former Air Deccan promoter GR Gopinath, Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej, Vikram Kirloskar of Kirloskar Group, among others.

As per the Tamil Brahmin practice, Lakshmi attired in a red silk saree, sat on her father's lap when Rohan, attired in 'dhoti' and 'kurta' and a Kannadiga turban, tied the 'malgalsutra' around her neck.

Lakshmi, 26, is on the board of TVS Motors headed by her father, while Rohan, 28, is doing his post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.

The food was vegetarian and the fare included best of Tamil and Kannadiga dishes.

The wedding was held at the J Farm near Chennai and a reception will be hosted in Bangalore by Narayana Murthy next week.

3 sisters commit suicide in Gujarat to end HIV misery

In a shocking incident, three HIV-infected sisters consumed pesticides and committed suicide late on Friday night at their home in Khadaliya village of Vartej taluka in Bhavnagar district.
Of the three sisters, two died on the spot while the third died in the government hospital at Bhavnagar. All the three girls were minors, the eldest being 16 years old.

Preliminary investigation by the police has revealed that all members of the girls' family are infected by the AIDS virus. The girls' mother, who died of HIV related complications a few years back, had acquired the deadly virus during blood transfusion given to her during a delivery several years back. Sources said residents of the village maintained distance from them because of the fear of the dreaded illness.

The last rites of the three sisters were conducted in the village on Saturday afternoon. The police have started further investigations regarding the incident.

According to unconfirmed reports, the sisters had taken the extreme step either because they were fed up of the social boycott or were worried about their future as their father, who also has the HIV virus, was continuously ill.

V Chandrashekhar, superintendent of police, Bhavnagar, said the three sisters had died after consuming pesticide. "They had consumed the pesticide at their home. All the three were HIV positive," Chandrashekhar said, adding that the family is very poor. When asked about the alleged social boycott of the family, he said he could not say anything as investigation is still going on.
The three sisters - Abha, 16, Meera, 12, and Chitra, 10, (names changed) - had consumed pesticides together at their home at around 11 pm on Friday.

"We rushed to the spot after 108 emergency services informed us that three sisters had committed suicide. The two had died on the spot while the third died at the government hospital in Bhavnagar where they were taken for treatment," said JR Zala, investigating officer of the case.Zala further said the mother and a brother of the deceased sisters, who were also HIV positive, had died four years back. "All the three sisters were living with their father on a farm outside the village with other family members, who worked as labourers on the farm," he said.

The investigating officer further said that the villagers had not completely boycotted the family but they maintained a distance from the family members. "The sisters were worried about their future as their father was also ill. We also came to know that the mother of the deceased acquired HIV from the blood given to her during delivery years ago," Zala said.

Mahesh Babu at Joy alukkas Opening, Mahesh Babu Launches Jos Alukkas Jewellery Showroom Photos

HYDERABAD: Many youngsters passing by Punjagutta on Saturday morning went crazy on spotting actor Mahesh Babu, who opened Jos Alukkas' first jewellery showroom in the city. Cheering and whistling, his fans went wild soon as he arrived at Punjagutta to inaugurate the showroom.

The scene was no different inside the showroom. Visitors tried every trick to get his autograph and capture images of the star on their mobile phones, giving a tough time to a battery of news channel camera persons and photographers, covering the event.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Mahesh Babu said he was proud to be associated with Jos Alukkas and promoting their brand. To a question, the star said he had not presented any jewellery to his wife. “But I am looking forward to it now,” he said.

Jos Alukkas which has its presence across Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry opened its 25th showroom in Hyderabad. There are plans to open four more showrooms, including Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, said Varghese Alukkas, Managing Director of Jos Alukkas.

“Our annual turnover is Rs. 1,000 crore and we are targeting Rs. 1,400 crore next financial year,” said Mr. Alukkas. Besides, choosing from wide range of jewellery, including wedding, antique, customers have the opportunity to buy personalised diamond jewellery, he said. Mayor Banda Karthika Chandra Reddy was also present on the occasion.

Arrested

Meanwhile, the police arrested two persons of Jos Alukkas, a jewellery showroom holding them responsible for slow down of traffic at Punjagutta.

This was a first of its kind reaction by the police in recent times over public events resulting in traffic jams. As hundreds gathered to have a glimpse of the star and scores of motorists too 

stopped by to find out what was happening, traffic came to standstill at Punjagutta junction.

“The higher-ups already announced that permission should be obtained for events like inauguration or organising an event involving celebrities,” Punjagutta SI U. Srinivas Reddy, said. He maintained showroom communications manager, Gangadharan and MD John Alukkas, invited action under section 188 (disobedience to law duly promulgated by public servant) of IPC as they didn't secure permission.

Sections 21 and 76 of City Police Act too were invoked against the duo. They were arrested and presented before a local court.
