Indian Girl Sukanya Roy Wins Spelling Bee Contest

It went on and on and on. Five spellers who seemingly had memorized the entire dictionary simply could not be stumped with any word tossed their way. It was getting late, way past bedtime and well beyond the time slot allotted by ESPN for its telecast.

Finally, after 21 consecutive spellings without a miss, one of them finally flubbed a word. Eventually, the others were gone -- having heard the telltale bell of elimination -- except for 14-year-old eighth grader Sukanya Roy of South Abington Township, Pa., who took home the trophy and the more than $40,000 in cash and prizes Thursday at the 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Future mobile to hit digital tv, 4G to come Soon

Interference from future mobile signals might make digital TV unwatchable for some Britons, Ofcom has said.

The telecoms watchdog is starting a research programme to find out how to help people affected when future mobile technology is switched on.

About 3% of TV-watching Britons could suffer interference from fourth-generation (4G) mobile, said Ofcom.

Filters will solve the problem for some, said Ofcom, but others may have to use other ways to get TV signals.

The problem of mobile and digital TV signals interfering with each other will arise because the chunk of spectrum reserved for 4G sits next to that used for broadcasting terrestrial digital TV signals.

The auction for the 800Mhz band is due to take place in 2012 and 4G services are expected to follow soon after. The rollout of 4G mobile will mean faster download and browsing speeds for handsets.

However, signals from base stations handling 4G services might cause interference in set-top boxes and digital televisions in homes nearby, said Ofcom in a briefing document.

Up to 3% of viewers of digital terrestrial television, about 760,000 people, might see interference if no action is taken, it warned.

In a bid to limit how many people suffer from poor picture quality, Ofcom has proposed running an education campaign to alert viewers about the possibility of interference.

Companies who buy a licence for part of the 800MHz spectrum will be expected to contribute to the costs of the education programme.

For the vast majority of affected viewers, filters will strip out the interfering signals.

However, said Ofcom, in 0.1% of cases, filters will not help and it is considering how best to handle those instances. Some viewers may have to find alternative ways to watch digital TV.

A consultation exercise which will consider ways to tackle the interference issue is being started at Ofcom and will run until 11 August.

Sun TV share price falls on 2G probe fears

The Sun TV and SpiceJet shares fell on the bourses on Thursday amidst speculation that Union textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran could be entangled in the 2G spectrum allocation scam probe. Sun TV share price fell by 27.90 per cent to settle at Rs 272.10 on the BSE. SpiceJet's share price also fell by 16.06 per cent to close at Rs 34.50 on the BSE.

Sun TV, the flagship company of the Maran family, is controlled by Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran's elder brother Kalanithi Maran. SpiceJet was last year acquired by the Marans for over Rs 750 crore.
Sun TV had in 2010-11 reported a net profit of Rs 772 crore on sales of Rs 1,924 crore. It is one of India's biggest TV networks running 20 TV channels. The SpiceJet stock also flew into bad weather and closed with a loss of 16.06 per cent at Rs 34.50. During the day, the stock hit its 52-week low of Rs 33.50. Its 52-week high was on November 8, 2010 at Rs 97.45. In 2010-11, SpiceJet reported a net profit of Rs 101 crore on revenue of Rs 2,879 crore. The Marans have chalked out an ambitious growth plan for the airline and are to induct new aircraft.

Kalanithi is one of India's highest paid corporate executives and among India's top high net worth individuals (HNI). Kalanithi, along with his wife Kavery (joint managing director in Sun TV), took home Rs 74.16 crore (Rs 37.08 crore each) as salary and allowances in 2009-10. As an HNI, Kalanithi has personally invested in SpiceJet, though brother Dayanidhi does not figure anywhere in the family's business.

Dayanidhi, as former telecom minister, is accused of favouring Malaysia's Maxis Communication to take control of Aircel, then owned by maverick businessman C. Sivasankaran, and then allotted spectrum in 14 circles at 2001 rates allegedly for personal gains. Dayanidhi has vehemently denied these allegations.

In these days, the moviegoers like to watch the massala film. Salman’s last film Dabangg, which received National Awards, had full dose of action and humour.

In one words, Reday has everything what a commercial film needs. The songs of film, ‘Character Dheela’ and ‘Dhnka Chika’ are already topped the chart.

The story of the film revolves around Prem (Salman Khan) and Sanjana (Asin).

Prem is a bachelor guy who wants to enjoy his life in full before getting married. His father Rajveer is against her wish but Prem gets support from uncle Gautam and Rishi.

On the other hand, Sanjana is an orphan, who lands in India to stay with her maternal uncles, Narendra and Tulsi.

Sanjana’s mamas are greedy and want to grab her property. Both Narendra and Tulsi tried to persuade her to get marriage with their brother in-laws but Sanjana sniffs their intentions.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘X-Men: First Class’

Prequels give Hollywood one last chance to resurrect exhausted movie franchises. But origin stories such as “Hannibal Rising” and director Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” only proved that some characters are best left in cold storage.
“X-Men: First Class,” an attempt to reboot the successful “X-Men” trilogy, makes audiences feel as if they just met Professor X and his merry band of mutants. Add one pitch-perfect cameo, and “First Class” stands as the superhero film to beat in a summer teeming with colorful heroes.
Director Matthew Vaughn of “Kick-Ass” fame doesn’t mind plumbing dark material to reset the saga. The story’s prologue features a child watching his mother’s execution by a Nazi thug.
“First Class” is set primarily in 1962, when the Cold War was raging and a mind reader named Charles Xavier (James McAvoy as a young Professor X) was starting his obsession with mutants.
When Charles learns about a CIA mission to stop a fellow mutant (a well-cast Kevin Bacon) from pushing the superpowers into nuclear war, he is only too eager to help. And that means finding more mutants to rally to America’s side.
