A catfight has broken out on Twitter between columnist Shobhaa De and Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba on the latter's run-in with the customs department for carrying jewellery worth nearly Rs 50 lakh.
De mocked Lamba, who was detained by the customs officials at Mumbai airport for carrying undeclared gold and diamond jewellery, in a caustic tweet on Friday.
De wrote on her Twitter page, "Poor Minissha: Lamba race ki ghodi or lame duck? Warning to other Bollywood wannabes to leave those borrowed rocks at home. Dazzle wt yr talent (sic)."
Lamba promptly retorted, "Ms De, real writers write books. Slandering on #Twitter is a job of the less gifted. 'Dazzle with your talent' Ms.De, Not ur slander ;) (sic)"
Lamba, who attended the premiere of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris at Cannes, was detained at the airport on Wednesday for not declaring jewellery estimated to be worth Rs 35-50 lakhs, has claimed that the ornaments were for promotional purpose and did not belong to her.
The 26-year-old, who was let off past midnight after being grilled for over 16 hours on her arrival from Cannes, was questioned again on Thursday, during which she admitted that she was not aware of the procedure of declaring the jewellery which she claimed had been carried from India for her stint at the international film festival.
Indian celebrities, relatively new to Twitter, have recently taken to exchanging ammo on the social networking site on the lines of their western counterparts. De herself was infamously alluded to as "fossil" by actress Sonam Kapoor and director Punit Malhotra on Twitter.
Recently, ad-man Suhel Seth and filmmaker Pritish Nandy took nasty pot shots at each other on Twitter. There is also a brewing cold war between filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and Johar, both known for making films of completely contrasting genres.
