Pakistan Cricketer Mohammad Asif dropped from film

Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Asif, who is under scrutiny for claims of spot-fixing, has been dropped from an Indian movie, its director has told the BBC.

Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri said he had hired Asif for his directorial debut, Mazhavillilinattamvare (Till the edge of the rainbow).

Asif was to play a Pakistani cricketer who comes to a coaching camp in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The film is about friendship told through the game of cricket, he said.

Mr Namboodiri said he had signed up the bowler two months ago after his son conducted a screen test with the cricketer in London.

"He is a friendly and nice guy. I was shocked to hear about the allegations, so I dropped him from the film," said Mr Namboodiri.

The director said Asif was supposed to come down to Kerala for a 25-day shooting stint next month.

The 27-year-old had been set for a "major part" in the film, which is to be made in the Malayalam language, spoken in Kerala.

"He was to play a Pakistani cricketer who comes down to India to hold a coaching camp for Indian players," said Mr Namboodiri.

The director added he had initially contacted former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram to play the role, but he had declined.

He said he was now seeking a replacement for Asif: "I have the names of two or three Pakistani cricketers in my mind."

Asif, along with team mates Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Kamran Akmal, have all been questioned by police over claims of spot fixing during Pakistan's ongoing tour of England, although wicketkeeper Akmal is no longer under investigation.

Asif is one of the top Pakistani fast bowlers with over 150 wickets in Test and one day international games.

Chiru At Rewind to the ‘evergreen 80s'

They would have probably run around trees together, had common tea breaks, rehearsed dialogues and dance movements, or maybe, discussed roles and costumes with each other at some point.

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------
Such moments and many more were relived by actors who rocked the south Indian film industry, at a reunion in the city on Sunday.

Organised and hosted by actors Suhasini Maniratnam and Lissy Priyadarshan, the evening, called ‘Evergreen 80's', had some of the most celebrated actors of those days coming together to simply have fun and reminisce those golden moments of their prime years.

“This is the second time such a reunion is being organised. It was absolutely lovely,” said Suhasini. The theme for the evening was black and green and all the actors were dressed accordingly. “Now, there is a big competition among us to host the next edition of the reunion,” she added.

All four southern states were represented in the icons - Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Mohan Lal and Ambarish. Organisers said Kamal Haasan could not participate, as he was travelling, and Mammootty, who was fasting for Ramzan, couldn't make it, either.

The hosts had made a poster with autographs of all the stars who attended the reunion last time, organised audio-visual presentations, music, dance and games.

Actors Ramya Krishnan, Khushbhoo and Radha danced for ‘Nila adu vaanathu mele…' and had the rest of the bunch tapping their feet.

Actor Mohan, who comes to one's mind at the instance of most of the hit songs of the period, said the reunion was touching. “The friendship and camaraderie that still exists and the bond we share go well beyond money, fame, hits and flops. It was most fulfilling,” he said.

The meeting was absolutely genuine, said actor Khushbhoo. “Nobody was a star there. We were like a bunch of excited school children. Imagine Rajini sir sitting on the floor and watching others perform. And he came and spent time with us, although it was daughter's pre-wedding sangeeth that evening!”

The evening was particularly special for Khushbhoo as she met Telugu actor Venkatesh, with whom she started her career in the south Indian industry in 1986. “Both of us were introduced in the Telugu film Kaliyuga Pandavulu together. That marked my entry to the south Indian film industry. It's about 25 years now. Wow! ”

From pranks at the shooting spot to what each of the actors is upto currently, the evening saw a lot of rewinding and sharing, leaving the actors excited about the next edition of the reunion already. As Khushbhoo put it, “The really nice thing is that we are all still around and doing well for ourselves!”

Lady Gaga Goes Crowd Surfing

HOT GALLERY ADULTS ONLY

Lady Gaga was a headliner at Lollapalooza over the weekend, and tens of thousands of people jammed Chicago's Grant Park to see her perform. But they might not have gotten the best Gaga show of the festival.

As you'll see in the (not especially SFW) video above, after joining Semi Precious Weapons on stage and banging on the drummer's kit for a short time, Gaga -- wearing fishnets and pasties -- decided to take a dive into the crowd. Security was not especially pleased with her crowd-surfing, but she seemed to be having a heckuva time. And the crowd, as you might expect, pretty much went nuts. (Check out all the phones and cameras pointed at her when she dives in.)
