A senior police officer, who could be questioned in connection with the murder of veteran journalist J Dey, was transferred today.
Assistant commissioner of oolice (ACP) Anil Mahabole, who was in-charge of Azad Maidan division in south Mumbai, has been shunted to the Local Arms Control Room in suburban Naigaon, an IPS officer said.
"Mahabole has a number of pending inquiries against him and we wanted a free and fair probe against him. That's why he has been transferred," he said.
He, however, did not elaborate on the nature of inquiries pending against the ACP.
Earlier in the day, a senior police officer said if required, Mahabole, against whom Dey, who worked with the city -based tabloid Mid-Day, had written some articles, may be questioned.
J Dey murder: Sketch of assailant released
Based on statement of man driving ahead of Dey’s bike before he was shot
The Mumbai Police on Monday released a sketch of one of the four suspects who pumped five bullets into J Dey, investigative editor of Mid Day, on Saturday. Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik said the sketch was based “purely on eyewitness description” as the footage from the CCTV camera installed near the crime scene was not of much help.
The sketch is based on the statement of a man who was driving ahead of Dey’s vehicle when he was shot. The driver gave details of the pillion rider of the bike that passed from his right side seconds after the murder. He described the man as being long-faced, dark complexioned, with a medium build and slightly thick lips. He added that the shooter was aged between 20 and 25 and wore a black hooded jacket at the time of the incident.
