Elephant Attack In Mysore has been fatal. Two wild elephants have entered the Bamboo Bazaar area of Mysore city in Karnataka, and have trampled a security guard to death. Forest guards and Mysore zoo authorities have been contacted and the smaller of the two elephants has been injected with a tranquilizer.


A diabetic, Balakrishna lying in the K R Hospital bed told Deccan Herald that the pachyderm suddenly rushed towards him while walking to his destination. He works in a powerloom in Bangalore and is a resident of Nayandahalli on the outskirts of the capital.


As two elephants ran amuck on the streets of Mysore creating panic among the residents, a few unlucky were caught in the melee only to face the wrath of the pachyderms.

Even as a sub adult tusker killed a security guard Renuka Swamy on Narayana Shastry Road, another female elephant injured about three people in Bamboo Bazaar area. 

Balakrishna who is under treatment at K R Hospital arrived in Mysore on the wee hours of Wednesday from a night train. He was on his way to a marriage ceremony early in the morning towards Bamboo Bazaar when he was caught unaware in front of the  tusker.

The tusker gored its leg and tried to pull him down when panic stricken public chased the animal.

An eighty year old Siddamma met with a similar fate and sustained serious injuries.

Siddamma is being treated at the same hospital for a fracture in the left rib and leg. “I just came outside the bathroom when the elephant rushed and attacked me in front of her house,” the elderly woman says cursing the jumbo.

Her daughter Saroja, who makes a living selling flowers said the elephant had its trunk coiled around her mother, and thumped her down with force.

For Mission Hospital staffer, Violet the day was equally shocking. The 54-year old who has still not been able to come to terms from the shock of the attack is under treatment at Mission Hospital, where she works as a’D’ group employee. Her daughter Roslin, who is also in shock said her mother was walking to hospital to join her work in the morning shift, along with her.

“A resident of Tilaknagar, Roslin said they could see a crowd approaching them, but could not sight the chasing elephant. As we saw the jumbo, myself and my mother hid ourselves near a cart. But, the elephant pushed the cart aside and pulled my mother with its trunk, only to thump on the floor twice,” Roslin says.

“My mother is the only guardian for me. I have no one else.  She should recover at the earliest,” said Roslin, battling her tears. Another youth Pavan also suffered injury in the jumbo attack.

Meanwhile, Forest Minister C H Vijayshankar visited the injured in the hospital and assured to bear the cost of the treatment. He asked the doctors to provide best of the treatment to the victims of this wild jumbo attack.
